Hudson Yards, the new $20 billion neighborhood only partially completed in Manhattan’s West Side, is the largest real estate development project in the history of America. It was created by Oxford Properties Group and Related Companies.
Ground was broken in December 2012, and the project isn’t expected to be completed until the year 2024. The 28 acres will eventually have close to 20 million square feet for residential super-tall towers with high-end apartments, a 1,296-foot tall office tower, restaurants, food halls, and retail with many high-end tenants, a 917-foot-tall tower with 285 apartments and luxury amenities with half already sold starting around $2 million even though it won’t open until the end of 2018, a 780-foot office tower which should open by the end of 2018, a sky-high observation deck that will be suspended over 1,000 feet in the air and open in 2019, a mixed-use tower with Equinox’s first concept hotel along with retail and office space on the ground floor to open in 2019, and more.
Some of the features being finished along the way have included a 52-story skyscraper that opened in 2016, a 33-story building with 178 one-bedroom apartments and a four-bedroom penthouse and many amenities that opened in 2017, the luxury boutique Forty Five Ten already occupying 16,000 square feet, and Hudson Yards having its own subway station.
An Art Installation in a New Public Park
An eye-catching beehive-esque 150-foot tall “public landmark,” named “The Vessel” will have 154 flights of stairs with 80 landings and 2,500 steps. The surrounding park will feature almost 30,000 plants, a seasonal blooms garden, and outdoor seating. The park and the Vessel are currently under construction and are expected to open in 2019.
The Shops and Restaurants at Hudson Yards
This seven-story retail building will contain at least 25 different restaurants and an upscale shopping center and is to open in 2019.
This will be a 200,000-square-foot six-level cultural center with a performing arts venue, exhibition space, an artists lab, and an event and rehearsal space on the top level. The most outstanding design element will be its retractable outer shell on the plaza level that can be deployed by a wireless remote within five minutes to create a sound, light, and temperature-controlled space.
